YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Nick Sexton and
Zach Beggs each homered in a nine-run fourth inning as the Young Harris College baseball team overcame an early five-run deficit to pick up a 14-7 non-conference victory over Truett-McConnell University Tuesday (March 28) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 11-17, while the Bears fell to 21-13. Young Harris travels to Carrollton, Georgia, Wednesday (March 29) for a 5 p.m. non-conference game against the University of West Georgia.
Truett-McConnell took a 5-0 lead after its first at-bat. Young Harris, which received 11 walks, got runs back on bases-loaded walks to
Zach Odom in the second inning and to
Brett Westmoreland an inning later.
The Mountain Lions broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth to take an 11-5 lead. After Odom walked to start the inning, Sexton followed with his fourth homer of the season to left field to pull YHC within a run at 5-4. Two batters later, Beggs connected on his team-leading 10th homer of the season - a solo shot to right-center field - to tie the score at 5. Westmoreland gave Young Harris the lead for good on his single to right.
Luke Miller had an RBI single, while Odom drove home a run on a grounder. Sexton also contributed a run-scoring single to left-center before
Rudy Gaona added a sacrifice fly.
Jackson Jones added an RBI single through the left side in the fifth before Beggs drove in another run on a double to left-center an inning later. Miller closed out the score on his solo homer - his sixth of 2017 - to left field in the seventh.
Young Harris collected 17 hits against seven TMU pitchers. Sexton, Gaona and Westmoreland led the way with three hits apiece, while Beggs and Miller added two each.
Aaron Barfield (1-0) earned the win for the Mountain Lions, while Hayden Carey (1-2) took the loss for the Bears.
