YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Nicole Kernohan and
Sarah Bialecki combined for seven goals to lead Young Harris College past the University of Virginia's College at Wise 13-10 in a non-conference women's lacrosse match Sunday (March 26) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions leveled their record at 6-6, while the Cavaliers fell to 6-3. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 1) at 1 p.m. when they entertain Saint Leo University.
Young Harris jumped out to quick 4-0 lead as Kernohan, Bialeck,
Rachel Lepine and
Kaylynn Roach each found the back of the net in the first six minutes. UVA-Wise got as close as 6-4 after Hannah Marshall scored with 8:20 remaining in the first half.
The Mountain Lions responded with four unanswered goals - two from Bialecki and goals from Kernohan and
Leigh Anne Turner - over the next 15 minutes to take a 10-4 lead with 23:29 remaining in the match. The Cavaliers pulled with a goal at 10-9 as they scored the next five goals, including a man-up goal by Jesse French on a free-position shot with 7:51 to go.
Young Harris restored order as they scored two goals - one by
Kendra Parenteau and the other by Kernohan - within a 17 second span to take a 12-9 lead with 7:12 left.
Kernohan finished with four goals, while Bialecki added three more.
Erika Cross, Turner, Lepine,
Katie McNutt, Parenteau and Roach added one each for the Mountain Lions. Cross tallied two assists, while Kernohan, Lepine and Turner had one apiece.
Meghan Tonnesen and Cross had four draw controls apiece, while
Kirsten Barth added two more. Bialecki, Turner and Cross each scooped up four ground balls.
Julia Darroch turned away 13 shots in goal for the Mountain Lions.
