YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College banged out 28 hits in a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader against Georgia College Saturday (March 25) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field, but the Bobcats swept the day with 14-13 and 16-7 decisions.
The Bobcats improved to 19-8 overall and 7-5 in the PBC while the Mountain Lions fell to 10-17 and 5-8. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (March 28) as they face Truett-McConnell College at 2 p.m. in Cleveland, Georgia.
Georgia College struck first in the second inning off an RBI single. Young Harris took the lead in the bottom half of the inning as they scored seven runs. The big hit in the inning was a grand slam to center field - his third of the season - off the bat of
Nick Sexton. Young Harris opened up an 11-3 lead in the fourth as they scored four runs, including a three-run homer to right-center field by
Tyler Washington. It was Washington's second of the season.
The Bobcats, who scored in each of the final five innings, fought back and scored six runs - three of them unearned - in the seventh to take a 12-11 lead.
Luke Miller hit a solo homer in the seventh to tie the game at 12 before Georgia College pushed across single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to open up a 14-12 lead. Miller, who has five homers on the year, got the Mountain Lions within a run on his solo shot to right field. The Mountain Lions had the bases loaded in the ninth, but GC reliever Grant Khan earned his third save of the year by getting a ground ball to end the threat and secure the win.
Zach Odom led the Mountain Lions in hits going 3-for-6. Sexton and Washington each went 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Miller had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored.
Zach Wall and
Rudy Gaona each collected two hits.
Colin LoCurto (2-1) picked up the win for the Bobcats pitching two innings of relief, allowing one hit and one earned run.
Jack Ganter (0-2) earned the loss for the Mountain Lions pitching 1/3 of an inning allowing one hit and one earned run.
Georgia College jumped out to an early lead in the first inning off a two RBI single.
Cory Ewald hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third, his second of the season, for the Mountain Lions, who cut the deficit to 3-1 . The Bobcats broke the game open with an 11-run seventh inning to give the Bobcats a 16-1 lead.
Brett Westmoreland hit a grand slam in the eighth inning, his sixth of the season, as part of a six-run eighth inning for Young Harris.
Odom led the Mountain Lions in hits with three. Westmoreland collected two hits and four RBI in the game two loss.
Adrik Yacelga, Sexton, Wall, Beggs, Washington, Miller, Ewald, and
Jackson Jones each tallied one hit for the Mountain Lions.
Trevor Guthrie (2-2) picked up the win for Georgia College scattering five hits and one earned run over five innings.
Michael Livingston (4-3) earned the loss for Young Harris allowing seven runs, six earned and one unearned, and nine hits over 6 innings.
