YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Kevin Kelly scored 10 points in overtime to lead the University of Montevallo to an 89-83 overtime Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory over Young Harris College Monday (Feb. 6) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Falcons, who have won the past nine meetings with the Mountain Lions, improved 15-7 overall and into a first place tie in the PBC West Division at 9-6. Young Harris, which had dropped the past four games including the last two in overtime, fell to 13-10 and 7-7. Young Harris will trek to Milledgeville, Georgia, Saturday (Feb. 11) for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Georgia College.
Young Harris rallied from an eight-point deficit (54-48) with 8:13 remaining in regulation to force the extra period. With 1.6 seconds left and the Falcons holding a 71-68 lead, Javonte Douglas had a chance to seal the win for Montevallo, but missed both free throws.
C.J. Wilson grabbed the defensive rebound took one step and heaved a three-pointer from about 70 feet from the right side of the court that hit nothing but net as the horn sounded.
In the overtime, Montevallo took a 78-75 lead on a free throw by Talan Whitaker with 2:29 left, but Wilson hit three free throws 62 seconds later to tie the game at 78. On the next possession, Whitaker sank two free throws to give the Falcons the lead for good at 80-78 with 1:27 to go. Montevallo pushed the lead to five (85-80) with 22 seconds to go, but
Ben Waterhouse nailed a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to get the Mountain Lions within a bucket at 85-83. However, the Falcons, who were 26-of-36 from the charity stripe (12-of-14 in overtime), sank four free throws in the final seconds to hold off the Mountain Lions.
Waterhouse, who was 8-of-12 from the field, led the Mountain Lions with 26 points, while Wilson finished with 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Corey Nelson added 16 points and seven rebound while
Marcellus Roberts added 12 points.
Whitaker led the Falcons with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Douglas added 21 points and 16 rebounds. Kelly finished with 20 points and Jamaar Taylor tossed in 13.
