MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. | Isaac Thomas scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half as Georgia College pulled away in the final minutes for a 78-71 Peach Belt Conference men's basketball victory over Young Harris College Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon at the Centennial Center.
The Bobcats improved to 14-10 overall and to 8-7 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions dropped their fifth consecutive game as they fell to 13-11 and 7-8. Young Harris hits the road for one final time in the regular season when they face Clayton State University Wednesday (Feb. 15) in a 7:30 p.m. league contest in Morrow, Georgia.
Young Harris tied the game for the fourth time at 57 on a
Demari Edwards three-pointer with 3:13 remaining. Georgia College broke the game open with six unanswered points to open up a 63-57 lead on two free throws by Thomas with 1:37 to go. Thomas had started the spurt with two free throws.
Marques McKoy's layup nine seconds later pulled the Mountain Lions within four points (63-59), but the Bobcats got an old-fashioned three-point play from Garrick DeBowles three seconds later to push the lead to seven points (66-59),. Georgia College was able to hold off the Mountain Lions as they sank 10-of-12 free throws in the final 60 seconds of the game to preserve the win.
Thomas added a team-high nine rebounds for the Bobcats. Kohl Roberts added 15 points while DeBowles, Desmond Mitchell-LaFlam and Austin Dukes each scored 13.
C.J. Wilson led the Mountain Lions with 19 points and six rebounds.
Ben Waterhouse added 14 points and McKoy finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
Bjorn Walker nearly had a double double with nine points and nine rebounds, while
Corey Nelson had eight points and six rebounds.Â
