WINTER PARK, Fla. | Rollins College spoiled the season opener for the Young Harris College baseball team as they held on for a 3-2 victory Friday (Feb. 3) evening at Alfond Stadium.
Rollins improved to 1-0, while Young Harris fell to 0-1. The two teams meet Saturday (Feb. 4) at 1 p.m. for the middle contest in the three-game weekend series.
Young Harris jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its first swings of the 2017 season.
Royce Woolfolk led off with a double to right field and moved to third on a ground out and later scored on
Nick Sexton's single.
The Tars responded with two runs off Young Harris starter
Michael Livingston (0-1) on a two-run double by Christopher Corbett. Rollins added another run on a Mike Dolin fourth-inning single to take a 3-1 lead.
The Mountain Lions, who stranded 10 runners on base, got a run back in the sixth on a Woolfolk ground out that score
Brett Westmoreland, who started the rally with a hit to left field.
Livingston struck out seven in four innings as the Mountain Lions. Young Harris used five relievers, who allowed just two hits and struck out four over the final four innings. Brad Case (1-0) earned the win for the Tars, while Joey Vecchione earned his first save with a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Sexton and Westmoreland had two hits apiece in the Mountain Lion seven-hit attack. Woolfolk,
Rudy Gaona, and
Luke Miller collected the other Young Harris hits.Â
