YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College and Auburn University at Montgomery split a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions won 12-1 in game one of the doubleheader, while the Warhawks held off Young Harris in the nightcap 12-10.
Both teams improved to 3-6 record after the split. The two teams will conclude the three-game series Sunday (Feb. 19) at noon.
Auburn Montgomery took an early 1-0 lead in the first after an error by Young Harris. The Mountain Lions answered back with a sacrifice fly by
Zach Odom to even the score. Young Harris took the lead in the second inning via RBI doubles by
Luke Miller,
Cory Ewald, and
Royce Woolfolk. Young Harris picked up two more runs in the fifth credited to a Miller single to open a 6-0 lead. The Mountain Lions tallied six runs in the eighth inning, thanks to a variety of plays including a two -run single by Ewald.
Woolfolk gathered four hits, one RBI and two runs scored in the win. Miller had three hits, three RBI and a run scored. Ewald collected two hits and two RBI.
Nick Sexton,
Rudy Gaona, and
Zach Wall each had two hits. Young Harris picked up six doubles in the game.
Michael Livingston (2-1) went seven innings, striking out eight, scattered six hits and only allowing one run. Garret Deloney (0-1) took the loss for the Warhawks.
Game two saw an almost opposite outcome as the Warhawks were up 10-0 after four innings. The Mountain Lions proved that the game was not over yet after scoring in each of the next four innings. Young Harris had the tying runs on base in the ninth but fell short 12-10.
Woolfolk tagged a three-run homer - his first of the year - in the fifth.
Zach Beggs launched a two-run homer - his team-leading sixth of 2017 - in the sixth and
Nick Sexton hit a solo shot in the seventh. It was Sexton's first long ball of the season. Beggs and Sexton led the team in game two combining for five hits, five RBI and three runs scored. Woolfolk, Odom, Wall, Jones, and Miller each picked up a hit.
McLain Harris (0-3) earned the loss, allowing five runs over three innings. Hank Scott (1-1) picked up his first win scattering five hits and striking out four.
