Young Harris storms by Hurricanes 80-44

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Seniors Meredith Tarver and Jenny Vernet combined to score 40 points as the Young Harris College women's basketball team stormed past Georgia Southwestern State University 80-44 in a Peach Belt Conference game Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 9-15 overall and to 5-12 in the Peach Belt, while the Hurricanes fell to 13-12 and 8-10. Young Harris returns to action Monday (Feb. 20) when they host Lander University at 5:30 p.m. The game was rescheduled from early January when the game was snowed out.

"We have played 10 straight great quarters of basketball," said YHC head coach Matt Stearsman. "These ladies were tremendous today. We battled, made some great plays, and were tremendous on the defensive end. I can't say enough about Jenny and Meredith and how good they were today, on their senior day. Sara Jorgensen was great too. They were all great today and I'm proud of them."

The Hurricanes led only twice in the early moments of the game. Young Harris took control of the game as they ended the first quarter on a 13-2 run to open up a 19-10 on a Tarver three-pointer and never looked back. Young Harris led by as many as 40 points (80-40) in the fourth quarter.

The Mountain Lions shot 50 percent from the field (34-of-68), including 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from long range. Young Harris committed a season-low nine turnovers and scored 21 points off 19 Hurricane turnovers.

Vernet led YHC with 21 points and 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. Tarver added 19 points and five rebounds, while Sara Jorgensen added a double double with 11 points and 11 assists. Jada Williams and Briana Bell each scored eight points. Meghan McQuade and Jorgensen grabbed six rebounds.

Va'Queshia Hall led the Hurricanes with 19 points.
