YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Ty'hesha Reynolds scored 18 points, seven assists and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Lander University past Young Harris College 65-51 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Monday (Feb. 20) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The game was a makeup for a contest that got snowed out back in January. The Bearcats improved to 21-6 overall and to 14-4 in the Peach Belt, while the Mountain Lions slipped to 9-16 and 5-13. Young Harris wraps up its season Wednesday (Feb. 22) when they host cross-mountain rival University of North Georgia in a 5:30 p.m. Purple Out/Battle of Blood Mountain PBC contest.
The Bearcats, who never trailed in the game, led 31-20 at halftime. Lander, which scored 21 points off 19 YHC turnovers, broke the game open as they started the third quarter with a 20-5 run to take a 51-25 with 4:32 to play on a Breshay Johnson old-fashioned three-point play.
"You take away the last four minutes of the first half and the the first six of the second half and you saw a great game," said YHC head coach
Matt Stearsman. "Lander has a ton of weapons and are very well coached. We got down 51-25 and then out scored them 26-14 the rest of the way. One thing you can say about our team is we will fight and I'm proud of them for that."
Young Harris got within 19 points (54-35) at the end of the third quarter on a
Jenny Vernet layup and used an 8-0 in the early stages of the final quarter to pull within 12 points (57-47) on a Jade Williams jumper with 6:52 to go. A putback by Vernet with 1:41 remaining got the Mountain Lions, who limited the Bearcats to just two field goals in the fourth quarter, within 10 (61-51), but YHC couldn't get any closer the remainder of the way.
Jessica Harris added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Bearcats, while Johnson and Mylea McKenith each contributed 10 points.
Meredith Tarver led Young Harris with 17 points and seven rebounds, while
Jenny Vernet added a double double - 15 points and 11 rebounds.
