YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The Young Harris College women's lacrosse team started their 2017 season Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field with a 21-6 victory over Converse College.
The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0 and will return to the field Saturday (Feb. 18) when they begin their defense of the Gulf South Conference title when they host the University of Alabama in Huntsville at 2 p.m. The Valkyries fell to 0-2.Â
Young Harris opened the scoring, netting six of the first seven goals as they opened up a 6-1 lead on a free-position shot by
Kendra Parenteau with 20:12 remaining. The Mountain Lions led by a 13-3 margin at the half and the final score was the largest margin for Young Harris.
Nicole Kernohan paced the Mountain Lions with five goals, while Parenteau,
Kaylynn Roach and
Maddie Peek each netted three goals.
Sarah Bialecki,
Erika Cross and
Leigh Anne Turner each scored twice, while
Rachel Lepine had one. Parenteau dished out five assists, while Bialecki had three. Kernohan added two assists, while Cross had the other.
Cross led the Mountain Lions with four draw controls, while Peek and Lepine accounted for three each.
Mary Deatrick,
Kirsten Barth and Parenteau added two draw controls apiece. Bialecki and
Hannah Sacristan each scooped up six ground balls, while
Anna Lummus had five, and Peek and Parenteau had four each.Â
Julia Darroch had turned away four shots for the Mountain Lions in goal.
