Mountain Lions overpower Golden Tigers 60-49

TUSKEGEE, Ala. | Young Harris College dominated in the second and third quarters to pull away from Tuskegee University 60-49 in a non-conference women's basketball game Saturday (Nov. 25) evening.

The Mountain Lions won their second consecutive game as they leveled their record at 3-3, while Tuskegee fell to 1-4. Young Harris returns to the YHC Basketball Arena Tuesday (Nov. 28) for a 6 p.m. contest against Anderson (S.C.) University.

Young Harris, which never trailed in the game, took an 8-5 lead after the first quarter as both teams got off to a slow start. However, the Mountain Lions took control of the game, outscoring the Golden Tigers 44-28 in the middle two quarters.

I'm really proud that we've held our opponents under 50 points in each of the past two games," said YHC head coach Matt Stearsman. "Any win is a good win and we did some really nice things. That being said, we missed 13 free throws and we turned it over 26 times. With some of our weapons offensively we could and should be scoring in the 70s or 80s, if we would just cut our turnovers in half."

The Mountain Lions led by as many as seven points four different times in the second quarter. Young Harris took a 28-21 lead after a steal and layup by Eryn Cochran with 2:07 remaining before the half. Young Harris scored seven of the first nine points in the third quarter as the Mountain Lions took a 35-25 lead with 6:55 left on a Ge'Naisha Robinson layup. YHC pushed its lead to 19 points (52-33) on an Ashlyn Ellison free throw later in the quarter. The Mountain Lions took its largest lead - 21 points (54-33) - on a Sarah Garner layup 39 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Cochran led Young Harris with 14 points, five assists and three steals, while Robinson added 11 points and four rebounds. Briana Bell added 10 points and three rebounds. Garner led the Mountain Lions with eight rebounds and added six points. Sara Jorgensen also scored seven points for YHC.

Cheyenne Williams led Tuskegee with 10 points.
