YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Ge'Naisha Robinson scored 19 points to lead Young Harris College to a 59-43 women's basketball victory over Auburn University at Montgomery Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon in the home opener at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Mountain Lions improved to 2-3, while the Warhawks fell to 3-1. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (Nov. 25) as they travel to Tuskegee, Alabama, to take on Tuskegee University in a 1:30 p.m. Central time contest.
The Mountains Lions lead wire-to-wire in the game. Robinson scored six of her 19 points in the first quarter to give the Mountain Lions a 13-7 lead.
Young Harris hit five three pointers in the first half, including two from
Briana Bell and
Eryn Cochran. The Mountain Lion defense held the Warhawks to just five points in the second quarter as Young Harris, which scored 12 of the final 13 points in the period, took a 30-12 at halftime.
"We played really, really, really hard," said YHC head coach
Matt Stearsman. "I'm very proud of our effort. We responded exactly the way we needed to after losing at Emmanuel. We talked a lot about playing hard, playing smart, and playing together. Once we cut our turnovers down, we can be a very good basketball team. That comes with experience - we have eight new people out there trying to figure out their roles among eight returners."
Auburn Montgomery outscored Young Harris 15-10 in the third quarter and came within seven points (50-43) after Alex Brown hit a three-pointer with 4:02 remaining in the contest. The Mountain Lions would end the game on a 9-0 run with the last four points coming off free throws by
Sarah Garner.
Cochran and Bell each had nine points, while Garner tallied six points and collected 10 rebounds for Young Harris. Evelina Avleeva scored 12 points for the Warhawks, while Brown put up nine.
