FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. | Mikayla Trombley scored 23 points to lead Emmanuel (Ga.) College to a 67-53 non-conference women's basketball victory over Young Harris College Tuesday (Nov. 14) evening.
The Lions improved to 2-0, while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-3. Young Harris opens its home schedule Saturday (Nov. 18) inside the YHC Basketball Arena against Auburn University Montgomery at 1:30 p.m.
"Emmanuel deserves all the credit tonight," said YHC head coach
Matt Stearsman. "They were relentless on the glass. Rebounding and defense is what we try to hang our hats on, but we struggled in both areas. That's how you win games when you shoot it poorly, like we did tonight. They wanted it a little more than us tonight"
The two teams battled through a tight first quarter.
Sarah Garner's layup with 1:36 remaining tied the game at 13 for the Mountain Lions. Emmanuel broke open the game by scoring the next eight points as the Lions opened up a 21-13 advantage on a steal and layup by Marina Moreno Bendal with 7:57 left in the first half.
Young Harris pulled back within two points (21-19) 86 seconds later as
Briana Bell and
Sara Jorgensen nailed back-to-back three-pointer. Emmanuel used a 16-6 run over the next six minutes as the Lions took a 37-25 lead with 29 seconds left on two Trombley free throws. A three-pointer by
Kaela Patrick by the Mountain Lions cut the deficit to 37-28 at the half.
Emmanuel extended its lead to 20 points (57-37) on a Trombley three-pointer with 6:11 to go. The Mountain Lions scored the next 10 points to cut the margin in half to 57-47 on two free throws by Bell with 4:11 remaining; however, that would be as close as Young Harris would get the rest of the way.
Taylor Delasbour added 19 points for Emmanuel,, which outrebounded Young Harris 38-26. Trombley grabbed nine rebounds for the Lions.
Bell led the Mountain Lions with 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Ge'Naisha Robinson added 12 points. Garner added 11 points and six rebounds for Young Harris.
