WILSON, N.C. | Dominique Tham scored 18 points to lead six players in double figures as the University of Mount Olive edged Young Harris College 87-84 Saturday (Nov. 11) afternoon on the final day of the 45 Second Classic at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Trojans improved to 1-1, while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-1. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Nov. 15T) when they travel to Atlanta for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest against Clark Atlanta University.
The Mountain Lions got off to another fast start as they jumped out to a 11-6 lead on a
Greg Murphy layup with 16:17 remaining. The Trojans battled back to take the lead at 22-20 on a Thomas Tyler three-pointer five minutes later. Young Harris tied the game at 26 on a
Ben Waterhouse jumper after a
Zion Williams steal with 7:37 remaining in the half.
It would stay close the remainder of the half until UMO reeled off an 11-4 run to take a 44-37 lead with 56 seconds left on a Tyler three-pointer.. The Trojans extended their lead to 11 points (50-39) on Tham's layup to start the second half.
Young Harris scored the next eight points to close to within three points at 50-47 on an
Antonio Wade jumper with 16:05 to go, but that would be as close as the Mountain Lions would get. Mount Olive pushed back its lead to 10 points (71-61) on a Tanner Poole layup with 7:10 to play. YHC got within three points (75-72) on a steal and layup from Wade with 4:21 left, but Tayon Gleaves nailed a three-pointer for the Trojans on their next possession to quell the threat.
Jamaal Matin and Dedric Boyd added 12 points each for UMO, while Gleaves, Cameron Robinson, and Thomas had 10 each.
Wade led the Mountain Lions with a career-high 30 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Waterhouse added 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds.
Nicksen Blanc recorded a double doubler with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Williams added nine points and
James Laput grabbed nine rebounds.
