ATLANTA, Ga. | Akil Douglas led six players in double figures with 18 points as Clark Atlanta University defeated Young Harris College 98-78 in a non-conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Nov. 15) evening.
The Panthers improved to 3-0, while the Mountain Lions fell to 1-2. Young Harris remains on the road for a 3:30 p.m. contest Saturday (Nov. 18) against Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
The lead see-sawed back and forth between the two teams the opening 14 minutes with neither team holding more than a five-point lead. After a
J.B. Charles layup with 7:07 to go tied the game at 22 for Young Harris. However, The Panthers took control of the game right before halftime as they scored nine unanswered points in an 83-second span to open up a 44-33 lead on two Austin Donaldson free throws with 15 seconds left.
In the second half, Clark Atlanta built its lead up to 16 points (57-41) on a Jamal Pollydore three-pointer with 14:43 left in the game. The Mountain Lions used an 10-2 run to cut the deficit in half (59-51) on a
Nicksen Blanc free throw with 12:32 remaining. However, that would be as close as Young Harris would get as Clark Atlanta pushed its lead back to 16 points (70-54) just over two minutes later.
The Panthers shot 52.9 percent (36-of-68) from the field in the game, including 57.9 percent (22-of-38) in the second half. The Mountain Lions hit just 40.8 percent (29-of-71) of their shots. Clark Atlanta converted YHC's 20 turnovers into 25 points, while the Mountain Lions only tallied four points of the Panthers' 12 turnovers. Young Harris did hold a 44-35 margin on the boards, including a 19-10 advantage on the offensive glass.
Mark Burton added 17 points for the Panthers, while Damien Davis (16), Pollydore (15), Donaldson (12) and Anthony Williams (10) also scored in double figures.
Charles led the Mountain Lions with 16 points, while Blanc registered a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds (nine offensive).
Zion Williams added 11 points for Young Harris while
Ben Waterhouse had 10.
James Laput contributed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Demari Edwards and
Antonio Wade added nine points each.
