WILSON, N.C. | J.B. Charles and
Antonio Wade combined for 47 points as Young Harris College rallied past Barton College in the second half for an 84-75 non-conference men's basketball victory Friday (Nov. 10) evening at Wilson Gymnasium.
The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-1. Young Harris has a quick turnaround as they face the University of Mount Olive on the final day of the 45-Second Classic Saturday (Nov. 11) at 11 a.m.
The Mountain Lions jumped out a to 20-11 lead after Charles nailed a three-pointer with 13:26 left in the first half. Charles scored 21 of his career-high 27 points in the opening 20 minutes as he went 5-of-8 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from long distance.Â
Barton fought back and used a 17-6 run to take its first lead of the game (28-26) after Isaiah Buck-Lowman hit two free throws with 6:33 left. The Bulldogs took their largest lead of the game - nine points (45-36) - after Jeff Gordon hit two free throws with 52 seconds left in the half.
Young Harris used a 14-7 run to start the second half to tie the game at 52 on a Charles' three-pointer with 15:22 to go. The Mountain Lions took the lead for good at 56-54 on a
Ben Waterhouse three-pointer 57 seconds later. YHC used a 7-0 run to open up a 65-58 lead on a free throw by
Angus Howey midway through the second half.
Barton closed the deficit to two points (71-69) after a Michael Boykin dunk with 2:58 remaining, but the Mountain Lions used a 8-2 run to take a 79-71 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play from
Nicksen Blanc with 48 seconds left. YHC held the Bulldogs at bay as they hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute. The Mountain Lions sank 27-of-43 free throws in the game.
Wade scored 19 of his 20 points in the second half as the Mountain Lions outscored Barton 46-30 over the final 20 minutes. Waterhouse added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Blanc tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Charles also pulled down nine rebounds.
James Laput grabbed a game- and career-high 15 rebounds for Young Harris.
Boykins and Bobby Stenborg led the Bulldogs with 22 points each, while Gordon added 14.
