YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | The University of West Georgia scored 13 runs over the final three innings to rally for an 18-7 non-conference victory over Young Harris College Tuesday (April 19) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The No. 23-ranked Wolves won their 14th consecutive game as they improved to 31-10 while the Mountain Lions fell to 12-31. Young Harris plays its final non-conference game of the season Wednesday (April 20) when they host Brevard College.
West Georgia opened up a 3-0 lead through the first three innings before the Mountain Lions tied the game at 3 in the fourth.
Jimmy Pinakidis started the scoring with a run-scoring single to left before
Jared Campbell stroked a two-run double of the right-center field wall.
The Wolves got two runs back in the top of the fifth before Young Harris equalized the game at 5 in the bottom half on Pinakidis' two-run single to left.
West Georgia took an 8-5 lead in the seventh on Tyler Hutch's three-run homer to left field. It was the eighth long ball of the season for Hutch, who drove in six runs. Young Harris rallied again in the bottom of the inning as
Zach Beggs homer to right and Pinakidis added an RBI double to right-center field. It was Beggs' team-leading ninth homer of the 2016 campaign.
The Wolves broke the game open with four runs in the eighth and six more an inning later. Dalton Rogers, who drove in five runs, connected on a grand slam to right in the ninth inning. It was his fifth homer of 2016.
Young Harris and West Georgia each had 12 hits in the game. Pinakidis led the Mountain Lions with three hits and four RBI while
Luke Miller, Beggs and
Brett Westmoreland had two hits apiece.
Turner Edwards (4-0) earned the win in relief for the Wolves while Mitchell Mannino earned his fourth save as he allowed just one hit and struck out four in 2 1/3 innings. YHC starter
Brent Thomas (1-1) earned the loss despite only allowing four hits in 6 1/3 innings.
