Falcons win series finale against Mountain Lions

MONTEVALLO, Ala. |  The University of Montevallo used 16 hits to defeat Young Harris College 11-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday (April 17) at Johnson Field.

The Falcons improved to 24-22 overall and to 15-12 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions fell to 12-30 and 6-18. Young Harris returns to Zell B. Miller Field Tuesday (April 19) for a 5 p.m. non-conference game against the University of West Georgia.

Montevallo took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Mountain Lions tied the game in the top of the third. Triston Smith led off with a single down the left field line and was sacrificed to second by Chris McGinnis and came around to score on Luke Miller's single to right-center.

The Falcons then scored 10 runs over the next five innings as they took advantage of five YHC errors to open up an 11-1 after eight. The Mountain Lions hot their final run in the ninth inning after Zach Odom was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Young Harris had six hits in the contest. Brett Westmoreland had two hits while Jimmy Pinakidis and McGinnis accounted for the others. McGinnis stroked tripled to left-center to lead off the fifth.

Alex Pondick (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Falcons while YHC starter Cole Amtmann (0-4) took the loss.
