UNG rallies for 7-5 win to capture Battle of Blood Mountain weekend series

DAHLONEGA, Ga. | The University of North Georgia used a five-run seventh inning to rally past cross-mountain rival Young Harris College 7-5 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball contest Sunday (April 10) afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.

The Nighthawks improved to 21-16 overall and to 11-13 in the Peach Belt after winning the weekend Battle of Blood Mountain series 2-1. The Mountain Lions fell to 12-25 and 6-15. Young Harris will return to Zell B. Miller Field Tuesday (April 12) for a 5 p.m. non-conference tussle with Tusculum College.

The Mountain Lions took a 3-0 lead in the second inning off UNG starter Chris Cobb (4-1). Zach Wall led off with a double to left-center field and scored on Zach Beggs' single up the middle. Brett Westmoreland connected on a two-run homer down the left field line. It was Westmoreland's second homer of the season.

UNG got within a run at 3-2 after posting single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Sam Tidaback doubled home the run in the fourth while Erick Delgado added an RBI double an inning later.

North Georgia got to YHC starter Cole Amtmann (0-2) in the seventh as the Nighthawks scored five runs.  Delgado added another RBI double to tie the game at 3. Devin Gearhart gave the Nighthawks the lead at 4-3 on a single to left. Joshua Profit, Tidaback and Trevor Sams added RBI singles to give North Georgia a 7-3 lead.

Young Harris got two runs back in the top of the eighth inning to close to within 7-5. Luke Miller drew a leadoff walk and Zach Wall followed with a two-run home run to left center field. It was his team-leading eighth homer of the 2016 campaign.

The Mountain Lions had the tying run at the plate in the ninth after Troy Kizer started the inning with a single to left field, but Zach Verner earned his second save of the year when retired the Mountain Lions on a fly out, a ground out and strike out.

Wall and Kizer led the Mountain Lions with two hits apiece.
