Connor Leies scored a college-record seven goals to lead the Young Harris College men's lacrosse team to a 25-7 victory over Ohio Valley University Monday (March 7) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mountain Lions won their fourth consecutive match as they improved to 4-3 while the Fighting Scots fell to 0-2. Young Harris will host an Education Day Wednesday (March 9) when they host Notre Dame de Namur University in a noon matinee.
Leies, who leads Young Harris with 20 goals in 2016, scored six times in the first half as Young Harris took a 13-5 lead at the half. The seven goals overall for the Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, native broke the previous record of six held by Leies – set earlier this season against Brevard College,
Mitch McDole (2015) and Ryan Ningard (2013).
Jayden Campbell and
Matt Spadafora also scored four times for the Mountain Lions, who outshot Ohio Valley 64-25.
Michael Gernatt tallied three scores while
Garrett Blake and McDole each found the back of the net twice.
Matty Ledon,
Mason McBroom and
Zach Stephenson each added a goal. Blake and Campbell assisted on two goals apiece while
Chandler Bradley,
Jake Dunlop, Ledon, Leies,
Kerry Ostrowski and Spadafora had one each.
Young Harris, which is currently eighth in the latest NCAA Division II statistics in face-off winning percentage (.644), won 23 of the 35 face-offs.
Zac Barrett, who is 19th in NCAA Division II in face-off winning percentage (.616), won 12 while Stephenson, who is eighth nationally with a .700 face-off winning percentage, won 11.
Stephenson led the Mountain Lions with seven ground balls while Barrett and Ledon accumulated five apiece.
