YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Nick Sexton's double to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning gave Young Harris College a 4-3 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Friday (March 25) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 10-17 overall and to 5-11 in the Peach Belt while the Braves fell to 20-9 and 7-6. The teams wrap up their weekend series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 26).
The Mountain Lions made the most of their four hits off UNC Pembroke pitcher Jesse Stinnett (5-1), who struck out eight in eight innings.
A two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the second by
Troy Kizer gave the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead. It was Kizer's second home run of the 2016 campaign.
Zach Beggs drew a two-out walk in front of the homer.
Beggs led off the bottom of the fifth with his team-leading sixth long ball to right-center field to give the Mountain Lions a 3-2 lead.
It would stay that what until the eighth inning when the Braves tied the game at 3 on an unearned run that was driven in by Drew Beaver's single to left field. Beaver led UNC Pembroke with three hits.
Zach Odom, who had a single in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, led off the winning rally with a one-out walk. Odom moved to second on a Stinnett wild pitch and came around to score on Sexton's 11th double of the season.
Cody Beck (2-3) picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief for the Mountain Lions. Beck surrendered two hits and struck out one while giving up an unearned run. YHC starter
