Frew shines in 4-2 victory over Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. | A strong start by Young Harris College hurler Donald Frew led the Mountain Lions to a 4-2 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over Francis Marion University Saturday (March 19) afternoon at Sparrow Stadium.

The Mountain Lions improved to 9-16 overall and to 4-10 in the Peach Belt while the Patriots sank to 16-10 and 4-7. The rubber game of the series will be Sunday (March 20) at 1 p.m.

Frew (2-3) worked around nine hits and only allowed an earned run in 7 2/3 innings. Frew struck out two and walked no one. The Mountain Lions also turned three double plays.

Troy Kizer accounted for the first run of the game for the Mountain Lions with his RBI single off FMU starter Brandon Cook (2-2) in the top of the second inning. Zach Wall started the fourth inning with a double into left field. Three batters later, Zach Beggs scored Wall from third base with an RBI single to right field, making it 2-0.

Luke Miller drove in a run in the seventh on a fielding error to make it 3-0 for Young Harris.

Francis Marion scored twice in the eighth inning to pull within a run a 3-2, but Cody Beck earned his first save of 2016 as he recorded the final four outs – two by strikeout – to preserve the win.

Young Harris added insurance run in the top of the ninth as Beggs drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Mountain Lions a 4-2 lead.
