Eli Crumley and
David Wallin were named to the all-tournament team as the Mountain Lions came up a stroke short of winning the Ralph J. Hargett Memorial Invitational Monday (March 14) afternoon.
Young Harris was edged out by Lenoir-Rhyne University for the team title by a stroke. Lenoir-Rhyne, which shot 10-under par 278 in the final round, finished the 54-hole tournament on par 72, 6,725-yard layout at the Monroe Country Club with a score of 851. The Mountain Lions shot a two-under par round of 286 to finish the tournament at 852, setting a new college 54-hole (NCAA era) record. The previous record of 860 was set last fall at the UNG Fall Invitational.
The Mountain Lions led the 17-team event after the first two rounds Sunday (March 13). Young Harris posted scores of 281 in the morning and 285 in the afternoon to set a new 36-hole standard at 566. The previous record of 573 was set at the UWG Matt Dyas Invitational in 2014.
Three YHC golfers set new personal bests for 54 holes. Crumley set the all-time program record (NCAA era) with a 54-hole score of 209 (70, 71, 68), finishing a stroke behind Tusculum College's Brad Hawkins (208) for medalist honors. The previous 54-hole record was set by Crumley at the UNG Fall Invitational. Wallin posted scorecards of 72, 70 and 68 to finish in a tie for third place at 210. The previous low 54-hole score by Wallin was 211 during the 2014-15 season.
James Rowe set new personal marks for 18- and 54-hole scores. Rowe posted a 68 in the opening round, lowering his previous low round by seven strokes. Rowe registered scores of 73 and 84 in the final two rounds to finish the tournament in a tie for 54th place at 225, four better than his previous-best finish.
Clark Melton had back-to-back rounds of 71 Sunday and added a 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for 27th place while
Trey Pearson shot scores of 74, 74 and 73 to finish in a tie for 39th at 221.
The Mountain Lions return to action next Monday (March 21) at the Cliffs Intercollegiate in Travelers Rest, South Carolina.
