Golden Knights rally past Young Harris 12-9

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Gannon University rallied from a five-goal deficit to take a 12-9 decision over Young Harris College in a women's lacrosse match Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 1-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 4-2. Young Harris returns to action March 8 when they face Slippery Rock University in a 3 p.m. contest in Davenport, Florida.

Young Harris opened the game by scoring six of the first seven goals to take a 6-1 lead after an unassisted goal from Kaylynn Roach with 14:31 remaining. Nicole Kernohan scored three of those goals while Sarah Bialecki and Kendra Parenteau netted the other two for the Mountain Lions.

Gannon reeled off the five goals – three from Tessa Mitchell - to tie the match at 6 after a Mitchell strike with 27:02 left in the match. Erika Cross put YHC up 7-6 nearly three minutes later, but Mitchell responded with an equalizer with 18:52 to go. The Mountain Lions scored twice – one from Cross and another from Kernohan – over the next 90 seconds to open up a 10-8 lead with 17:25 to play, but that would be the final score for Young Harris.

Gannon, who outscored Young Harris 9-3 over the final 30 minutes, got free-position scores from Ashley Mozingo and Kelsey Bright to tie the match at 9 with 11:41 remaining. Kelsey Bright gave the Golden Knights the lead for good at 10-9 with 10:01 to play. Micaela Capozzo and Mitchell, who score five times, added insurance goals in the final five minutes.

Rachel Lepine added two assists for the Mountain Lions while Cross and Taylor Lincoln had one each. Lepine and Meghan Tonnesen each led Young Harris with four draw controls, while Parenteau scooped up three ground balls. Lepine and Hannah Sacristan led YHC with two caused turnovers each.

Julia Darroch recorded 10 saves between the pipes for the Mountain Lions.
