Mountain Lions drop game to Montevallo, earns No. 3 seed from PBC West

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | University of Montevallo used a 23-5 run in the opening minutes of the second half as the Falcons defeated Young Harris College 84-67 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Feb. 24) evening at the YHC Basketball Arena.
 
The Falcons, who have won seven straight games in the series against YHC, improved to 18-8 overall and to 14-5 in the conference to earn the No. 2 seed from the West Division in the upcoming PBC Tournament that starts Saturday (Feb. 27). The Mountain Lions fell to 15-13 and to 13-6 and will be the No. 3 seed from the West. Young Harris will travel to Augusta, Georgia, Sunday (Feb. 28) for a 4 p.m. quarterfinal game against Augusta University – the No. 2 seed from the East Division.
 
Montevallo took a 39-33 lead at the half as Bryant Orange banked in a three-pointer from the left side as the horn sounded. Young Harris cut the lead to 39-35 on two Ben Waterhouse free throws 34 seconds into the half. The Falcons got seven straight points – a three-pointer and two layups - in less than a minute from Kevin Kelly as UM opened up a 46-35 with 18:22 to go.
 
The Falcons put together a 10-1 run four minutes later to open up a 22-point lead (62-40) on a Malik Fields jumper with 11:34 remaining. Montevallo, which shot 63.0 percent (17-of-27) from the floor in the second half, led by as many as 25 points (76-51) before Young Harris got as close as 12 points (78-66) on a Marcellus Roberts jumper with 1:54 to go.
 
Orange led Montevallo with 21 points, six assists and six rebounds while Terrell Lipkins added 16 points and six assists. Tevin Worthy added 14 points and eight rebounds while Kelly contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.
 
C.J. Wilson and Waterhouse led the Mountain Lions with 18 points apiece. Wilson added seven assists and seven rebounds while Roberts finished in double figures with 12 points. Bjorn Walker grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
