Mountain Lions end season with 84-76 quarterfinal loss to Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. | Augusta University got 24 points and 12 rebounds from Tommy Williams as the Jaguars held off Young Harris College 84-76 Sunday (Feb. 28) afternoon at the Christenberry Fieldhouse in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Jaguars, who improved to 18-10, advances to the tournament semifinals in Columbus, Georgia, next Saturday (March 5). Augusta, which is the No. 2 seed from the East Division, avenged the Mountain Lions' 83-76 upset in last year's quarterfinals. The Mountain Lions, the No. 3 seed out of the West Division, ended their 2015-16 campaign at 15-14.

Augusta led for all but four minutes in the game. The Mountain Lions, who will return their entire lineup next season, took their only lead at 27-26 on a Marcellus Roberts jumper in the paint with 3:17 remaining before halftime.

The Jaguars took a 37-32 halftime lead after Keshun Sherrill hit three free throws with less than a second remaining. Augusta pushed its lead out to as many as 14 points (58-44) after Ja'Shawn Brooks hit a three-pointer with 13:59 to go.

The Mountain Lions pulled to within five points (62-57) as Devin Coleman's jumper with 9:06 left ended a 6-0 run by Young Harris. However, the Jaguars thwarted the YHC rally and saw their lead soar to 12 points (82-70) with 1:24 to play on two more Sherrill free throws. Sherrill scored 11 of his 15 points from the charity stripe. Augusta held a 25-13 advantage from the free throw line.

Young Harris would get as close as six points (82-76) on a three-pointer by C.J. Wilson with 27 seconds left.

Augusta, which scored 24 points off 16 Young Harris turnovers, shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor. Tamyrik Fields also finished in double figures for the Jaguars with 14 points.

Wilson led the Mountain Lions with 21 points and six assists while Coleman tossed in 13 points. Marques McKoy and Roberts each finished with 12 points. McKoy pulled down eight rebounds while Roberts grabbed seven.
