Cougars rally to sweep doubleheader from Mountain Lions

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Columbus State University swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (Feb. 20) afternoon at the Zell B. Miller Field.
 
The Cougars used an eight-run third inning to take a 12-5 win in the opener. Columbus State scored eight runs in the final three innings to rally for 13-12 decision in the nightcap.
 
Columbus State improved to 8-2 overall and to 3-0 in the league while the Mountain Lions fell to 4-6 and 0-3. Young Harris returns to action Friday (Feb. 26) when they host No. 26 Lander University in a 4 p.m. PBC home contest.
 
The Cougars scored eight times in the third inning in game on as they took advantage off three YHC errors to take control with a 9-0 lead.
 
Mike McClellan led the Cougars with five hits and drove in three runs. Luke Miller, Zach Wall and Casey Selfe each led the Mountain Lions with two hits. Miller also drove in two runs. Nick Sexton, Miller, Wall, Troy Kizer and Selfe had doubles for Young Harris.
 
Brandon Koehler (2-0) earned the win while Cody Beck (0-2) took the loss.
 
In the second game, Young Harris jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 12-5, but Columbus State rallied over the final three innings, including five runs in the eighth inning. The Cougars tied the game at 12 on a Matt Nettles run-scoring single to center in the ninth. Nettles, who had a two-run homer in the fifth, scored the game-winning run on a Dylan Gibeau (0-1) wild pitch.
 
Miller led Young Harris with three hits and hit a three-run homer to left field – his first of 2016 – in the fifth inning. Sexton and Brett Westmoreland each had two hits. Westmoreland collected 4 RBI, including a two-run double in the sixth. Sexton drove in two runs with a second inning single.
 
Kolton Ingram (2-0) held the Mountain Lions scoreless and hitless over the final two innings to pick up the win for the Cougars.
 
Every starter had at least one hit for the Cougars, including six players that had two.
