YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Cody Gray scored four goals as Florida Southern College spoiled the home opener for Young Harris College 10-3 in a non-conference men's lacrosse match Saturday (Feb. 13) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Mocs improved to 1-1 while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-3. Young Harris returns to action in two weeks when they host Brevard College in a 5 p.m. home match Feb. 27.
Gray gave Florida Southern a 1-0 lead midway through the first quarter before
Mitch McDole equalized the match at 1 off an assist from
Bruce Silk with 2:56 to go in the quarter. Cody Dyer gave Florida Southern the lead back on a goal with 21 second left.
The Mocs used four unanswered goals, including two from Kyle Silverstein and another from Gray – to take a 6-1 lead at the half.
Young Harris struck first in the third quarter – a
Matt Spadafora goal off a Silk assist – at the 12:18 mark, but Florida Southern got goals from Gray and Dyer in the final two minutes of the quarter to take an 8-2 lead.
Connor Leies would add a man-up goal with 13:00 left to cut the deficit to 9-3 for the Mountain Lions, but they couldn't get any closer.
Florida Southern held a 42-31 advantage on shots and both teams scooped up 28 ground balls. Young Harris claimed 11 of the 15 face-offs, with Zach Barrett winning six and
Zach Stephenson claiming the other five.
Stephenson led the Mountain Lions with five ground balls while
Mason King had four. Barrett,
Darrien Mask and
Garrett Blake also picked up three ground balls for Young Harris.
King recorded 12 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
