YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Damien Davis scored 20 points to lead four Clark Atlanta University in double figures as the Panthers held off Young Harris College 77-74 in a non-conference men's basketball game Wednesday (Nov. 30) at the YHC Basketball Arena.
Clark Atlanta improved to 4-3, while the Mountain Lions slipped to 5-3. Young Harris will now break for final exams and will return Dec. 10 to host Carver Bible College in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
The Panthers used a 7-2 run at the start of the second half to open up their largest lead of the game - 12 points (42-30) - on a Tim Sanders layup with 17:56 to play. Young Harris got themselves back in the contest as they reeled off 11 unanswered points over a three-minute stretch to tie the game at 56 after a
Marcellus Roberts layup with 7:13 to play.
It was nip and tuck for the next three minutes as both teams trade the lead back and forth. Clark Atlanta used a 5-0 spurt to open a 69-64 lead on two Davis free throws with 3:25 remaining. Young Harris got within a point at 75-74 on three-pointer from
J.B. Charles with 17.1 seconds to go. However, the Panthers connected on a couple of free throws to seal the win . The Mountain Lions had two chances to tie or win the game, but couldn't get either chance to fall.
"Basketball always comes down to a one on one game and we didn't do a good job tonight," said YHC head coach
Pete Herrmann. "I didn't think we guarded very well in the post tonight."
Davis also added seven rebounds for the Panthers while Sanders finished with 16 points. Derek Harper (13) and Shamiek Sheppard (11) also finished in double figures for Clark Atlanta. Lawrance Triplett grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Panthers.
C.J. Wilson led the Mountain Lions with 26 points while Roberts added 17 more.
Corey Nelson added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Bjorn Walker and Marcus McKoy also grabbed six rebounds for Young Harris.
