YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. | Young Harris College used a balanced scoring attack as the Mountain Lions picked up an 87-67 men's basketball victory over Carver College Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Mountain Lions, who hadn't played in 10 days due to finals, improved to 6-3. Young Harris will open its Peach Belt Conference schedule next Saturday (Dec. 17) when they entertain the University of South Carolina Aiken in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
J.B. Charles led the balanced attack with 15 points while
C.J. Wilson added 14 points and nine assists.
Corey Nelson and
Marcellus Roberts each scored 12 points, while Roberts nearly had a double double as he grabbed nine rebounds.
Damari Edwards also finished in double figures with 10 points while
Bjorn Walker tossed in eight.
Marques McKoy also pulled down seven rebounds.
Despite shooting 55.6 percent from the field (20-of-36) in the opening 20 minutes, the Mountain Lions only led 47-40 at the half.
"We rebounded  and defended the ball better (limited Carver to 30.8 percent shooting and held a 24-17 advantage in rebounds) in the second half," said YHC head coach
Pete Herrmann. "We had a swarm of white jerseys on the glass in the second half. We have to continue doing these things as we get ready for conference play.
"Everything counts from this point forward," added Herrmann. "I am very confident that this team will continue to get better with each game."
Young Harris, which never trailed in the game, used a 13-3 run in the early moments of the second half to take a 68-49 lead with 9:55 to go on an old-fashioned three-point play by Nelson, who scored seven of his points during the run. The Mountain Lions, who held a 17-6 advantage on points off turnovers, took their largest lead of the game - 25 points (81-56) - on two free throws by Charles with 4:20 left.
