YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. |Â The men's homecoming basketball game Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon between Young Harris College and Virginia State University was a see-saw affair.
The game at the YHC Basketball Arena saw the score tied 16 times and had seven lead changes.
C.J. Wilson sank an 17-foot jumper in the circle with 2.9 seconds remaining to give the Mountain Lions the lead for the final time as Young Harris picked up an 83-80 decision over the Trojans.
"I thought this had the feel of an NCAA tournament game with all the tie scores and lead changes," said YHC head coach
Pete Herrmann. "Both teams played at a high level today. C.J. played like an all-American."
Virginia State took a 40-32 lead lead with 1:58 to go in the first half on a Kevin Williams three-pointer, but Young Harris managed to pull within a point (41-40) at the half. From that point the game seesawed back and forth between the two teams as neither squad led by more than three points the final 20 minutes of the contest.
Wilson, who is 18 points away from becoming the all-time leading men's scorer for the Mountain Lions in the NCAA era, led Young Harris with 26 points. Eleven of those points came from the free throw line were the Mountain Lions went 24-of-34  on the day.
"We did a great job of taking care of the basketball as we only turned the ball over six times and we were able to get to the free throw line."
Ben Waterhouse added 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor while
Marcellus Roberts added 17 points and seven rebounds.
Marques McKoy nearly had a double double with nine points and nine rebounds.Â
"Marcellus and Marques were really tough for us on the boards today," added Herrmann. "When our guards score 44 points, we are going to have a chance to win the game."
Richard Granberry led Virginia State with 20 points while Elijah Moore and Waymond Wright each tossed in 13.
