TAMPA, Fla. | C.J. Wilson scored 20 points but it wasn't enough as the University of Tampa edged Young Harris College 68-60 in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday (Nov. 22) evening at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
The Spartans improved to 3-2 while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-2. Young Harris continues its Florida trip Friday (Nov. 25) when they face Florida National University in a 5 p.m. contest on the first day of the Cesar Odio Thanksgiving Classic being played in Miami Shores, Florida, on the campus of Barry University.
With his 20 points, the senior guard from Conyers, Georgia, now has 1,575 points in 87 career games to become the Mountain Lions's all-time leading men's scorer in the NCAA era, surpassing Frank Adams' (2010-13) total of 1,573 points. Wilson needs just 24 points to become the all-time leading scorer at YHC to pass women's basketball player Ladondra Johnson (1,598).
Young Harris fell behind early as the Mountain Lions, who went over 10 minutes in two different stretches in the first half without a field goal, shot just 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. Tampa led 32-20 at the half.
The Spartans extended their lead to 15 points (37-22) 75 seconds into the second half on a Grant Bryant layup; however, the Mountain Lions couldn't get any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Wilson was the lone Mountain Lion player in double figures,
Marques McKoy and
Marcellus Roberts each finished with eight points, while McKoy grabbed eight rebounds.
Duke Shelton led Tampa with 18 points and 16 rebounds as the Spartans held a 43-30 edge on the glass. Austin Rettig (16) and Pat Bacon (10) also reached double figures for Tampa.
