BRISTOL, Tenn. | Mack Owen's baseline jumper with less than three seconds remaining in overtime gave King (Tenn.) University an 83-81 overtime victory over Young Harris College in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Student Center Complex Wednesday (Nov. 16) evening.
The Tornado improved to 1-2 while the Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 24 in the latest D2SIDA Media Top 25 poll, fell to 2-1. Young Harris opens the home portion of its schedule Saturday (Nov. 19) when they host Virginia State University in a 4 p.m. homecoming contest at the YHC Basketball Arena.
King forced the extra time when C.J. Good hit a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 71.
The Tornado opened up a five-point lead (78-73) in overtime after Noble Fahnbulleh hit two free throws with 3:05 left.
Ben Waterhouse pulled the Mountain Lions within two at 78-76 with a three-pointer nearly a minute later. King took an 81-78 on another Fahnbulleh free throw with 38 seconds left, but
J.B. Charles nailed a three-pointer 20 seconds later to knot the score at 81 before Owen's game-winning shot.
"It was a terrific game," said YHC head coach
Pete Herrmann. "Both teams played hard and their player made a clutch shot to send the game into overtime. We didn't make a single stop in overtime as King converted all four possessions. We also got outrebounded in the game and we missed some free throws down the stretch (in regulation) that could have been the difference."
Â
Young Harris, which had another good shooting night as they hit 55.4 percent (31-of-56) from the field, took its largest lead of the game - 10 points (28-18) - on an old-fashioned three-point play by
Damari Edwards with 6:08 remaining in the first half. The Mountain Lions took a nine-point advantage (37-28) at the half, but the Tornado used a 9-1 run midway through the second half to regain the lead at 54-53 on a Desean Enzor three-pointer with 8:58 to go. From that point, neither team held more than a five-point lead the remainder of the game.
Marcellus Roberts led the Mountain Lions, who had five players in double figures, with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
C.J. Wilson recorded his second double double of the season with 15 points and 10 assists, while Waterhouse contributed 13 points.
Darrius Sizemore tossed in 11 more while
Bjorn Walker added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Owens led King with 24 points while Fahnbulleh and Good added 14 apiece. Derick Pope added 10 points and eight rebounds for King, which held a 40-29 advantage on the boards.
