WILSON, N.C. | The Young Harris College men's basketball team didn't miss many shots Saturday (Nov. 12) morning at Wilson Gymnasium.
Playing less than 14 hours after their win over Barton College, the Mountain Lions showed little effect in their 94-78 victory over the University of Mount Olive on the final day of the 45 Second Classic. The game was moved up three hours from their original start time to accommodate Barton's hosting of its conference volleyball tournament.
Young Harris improved to 2-0 while Mount Olive fell to 0-2. The Mountain Lions conclude their three-game opening road trip with a 7 p.m. contest Wednesday (Nov. 16) at King (Tenn.) University in Bristol, Tennessee.
The Mountain Lions shot 62.7 percent (37-of-59) from the field for the game, including a sizzling 71.9 percent (23-of-32) in the opening 20 minutes. YHC was just as hot from long range, hitting 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from three-point range.
"It was fun watching today," said YHC head coach
Pete Herrmann. "We shot the ball really well in the first half and then was able to hold Mount Olive to 35 percent in the second half."
Young Harris took control of the game as the broke a 38-all tie with a 17-4 run over the final six minutes of the first half to take a 55-42 lead at the half. The closest the Trojans would get the remainder of the game was 11 points (74-63) midway through the second half. The Mountain Lions took their largest lead - 21 points (91-70) - on two
Ben Waterhouse free throws with 3:41 to play.
Waterhouse and
C.J. Wilson combined for 45 points. Waterhouse led the Mountain Lions with 24 points - tying his career high set last year against Georgia College - as he connected on 9-of-12 shooting, including nailing all four three-pointers he took. Wilson added 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while picking up a double double with 11 assists.
"Ben and C.J. really played well today," said Herrmann. "Ben hit a couple of shots as the shot clock was winding down and C.J. had 11 assists while turning over the ball just once."
Young Harris had five players finish in double figures. In addition to Waterhouse and Wilson,
J.B. Charles added 13 points off the bench while
Bjorn Walker added 11 and
Marcellus Roberts tossed in 10 more. Charles grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Roberts, Walker and
Marques McKoy each grabbed five.
"J.B. gave us some good minutes off the bench and Marcellus and Bjorn played great for us inside," added Herrmann.
Tayon Gleaves led the Trojans with 23 points.
