Catawba holds off furious Mountain Lions rally in final minute for 17-16 win

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Caroline Beggs and Alyssa Corace combined to score nine goals as Catawba College held off a furious rally by Young Harris College in the final seconds for a 17-16 women's lacrosse win Tuesday (April 7) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

The Catawba Indians improved to 8-7 while the Mountain Lions slipped to 9-5. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (April 8) when they host Lincoln Memorial University in a 7 p.m. contest.

Catawba, which led 12-7 at the half, maintained its five-goal advantage as they took a 15-10 lead on back-to-back Corace goals with 17:43 remaining. Young Harris got as close as three goals as Katie McNutt and Amanda Kernohan found the back of the net with 10:46 to play.

Catawba took a 17-13 lead on a man-up goal by Meredith Jones with 4:53 left. Young Harris closed the game by scoring three times in the final 68 seconds. McNutt and Amanda Kernohan teamed up on the first goal with 1:08 left before Nicole Kernohan and Ivey Franklin scored on free-position shots to close within a goal at 17-16 with nine seconds remaining. Young Harris, which won 11 of the 15 second-half draw controls in the second half, got the final draw control but couldn't get off a shot before the horn sounded.

Nicole Kernohan led Young Harris with four goals while McNutt had three. Amanda Kernohan and Jaclyn Kernohan and Rachel Lepine each accounted for two scores while Alexia Audet, Jordana Freitas and Franklin had one apiece. Amanda Kernohan had three assists while Jaclyn Kernohan has two and Audet and Lincoln accounted for one each.

Lepine led the Mountain Lions with six draw control wins while Lincoln had five. Lincoln paced YHC with six ground balls while McNutt scooped up five. Audet, Amanda Kernohan, Meghan Tonnesen had four ground balls while Nicole Kernohan and Freitas had three apiece.

Goalies Sarah Nudelman (eight) and Carter Moore (five) turned away 13 shots between the pipes for the Mountain Lions.
