Mountain Lions drop doubleheader to UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Pembroke swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (March 28) afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves won the opener 12-1 before scoring the final seven runs in game two to win 12-5.
UNC Pembroke improved to 23-7 overall and to 11-6 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions fell to 10-20 and 7-13. The teams wrap up their three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday (March 29).
The Braves collected 35 hits in the doubleheader as every starter in both games registered at least a hit. Collins Cuthrell drove in a team-high three RBI in game one, including two on his 17th homer of the season as part of a seven-run seventh inning.
 
Michael Livingston had two of the six hits the Mountain Lions had six hits in game one. Logan Bell drove in the Mountain Lions run in the seventh on a single to center field.
 
Cole Amtmann (1-4) took the loss for the Mountain Lions as he only allowed one earned run in six innings. Wes Helsabeck (5-0) struck out seven in eighth innings to earn the win.
 
Young Harris used a five-run fifth inning in the nightcap to tie the game at 5. Livingston drove in the first two run with a single up the middle. Zach Odom followed with a two-run single to right field. Zach Wall closed out the scoring with a RBI single to left.
 
The Braves retook the lead off reliever Dylan Gibeau (1-3) in the sixth as they scored two unearned runs off a throwing error. UNCP added five insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Odom had two hits for the Mountain Lions in the nightcap.
 
Logan Cook (5-1) earned the win with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.
