Second half rally comes up short for Mountain Lions in 12-11 loss at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Young Harris College rallied from a six-goal deficit in the second half to tie the match, but Newberry College rallied for a 12-11 women's lacrosse victory over the Mountain Lions Wednesday (March 25) at Setzler Field.

The Wolves improved to 3-7 while the Mountain Lions fell to 8-3. Young Harris returns to the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field Saturday (March 28) for a 1 p.m. match against Florida Tech.

Newberry opened a 9-3 lead as they scored a man-up goal by Katie Thompson on a free-position shot with 26:22 remaining in the match. Young Harris got back into the match as they reeled off five unanswered goals – two by Alexia Audet and Nicole Kernohan and one by Katie McNutt – over a four-minute stretch to close within a goal at 9-8 with 19:26 to play,

The Wolves took a 10-8 led on an Ajahna Grosvenor strike 23 seconds later but the Mountain Lions goal back-to-back free-position goals by McNutt and Nicole Kernohan with 46 seconds to tie the match at 10 with 11:35 left.

Newberry took the lead on a Victoria Davis goal with 6:16 to play and added an insurance man-up goal by Tessa Davis 90 seconds later to open up a 12-10 advantage. Young Harris got a man-up goal from Jaclyn Kernohan with 41 seconds remaining, but couldn't find the tying goal.

Audet led the Mountain Lions with four goals and an assist while Nicole Kernohan had three goals. McNutt found the back of the net twice, while Rachel Lepine and Jaclyn Kernohan had one each. Jordana Freitas added an assist.

Meghan Tonnesen won four draw controls and Jaclyn Kernohan captured three more for the Mountain Lions. Nicole Kernohan scooped up five ground balls while McNutt, Taylor Lincoln and Freitas collected four apiece. Lepine, Jaclyn Kernohan and Anna Lummus also recorded three ground balls each.

Sarah Nudelman tallied nine saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
