YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Florida Institute of Technology scored 12 goals in the second half as the Panthers defeated Young Harris College 20-8 in a women's lacrosse match Saturday (March 28) afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The Panthers improved to 5-5 while the Mountain Lions fell to 8-4. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (April 2) when they host Converse College at 2 p.m.
The teams traded the lead back and forth for most of the first half. Young Harris tied the game at 6 on a goal by Amanda Kernohan with 7:39 left. Allie Modica, who led the Panthers with seven goals, and Heather Roche tallied scores over the final five minutes as the Panthers took an 8-6 lead at the half.
Those two goals were part of six consecutive goals for Florida Tech as the Panthers opened up a 12-6 lead as Sara Grenier, who added four goals, scored with 23:00 left. Young Harris scored two of the next three goals as Rachel Lepine and Alexia Audet found the back of the net to trim the deficit to 13-7 with 18:41 to play, but the Panthers scored the game's final seven goals.
Lepine and Nicole Kernohan led the Mountain Lions with two goals while Taylor Lincoln and Jaclyn Kernohan also scored. Amanda Kernohan, Jaclyn Kernohan and Lincoln registered an assist apiece.
Lepine led the Mountain Lions with six draw controls while Meghan Tonnesen had three and Lincoln and Kendra Parenteau had two each. Parenteau led Young Harris with seven ground balls while Lincoln, Amanda Kernohan, and Anna Lummus each scooped up six. Lepine tallied five ground balls and Katie McNutt had three.
Goalies Sarah Nudelman (eight) and Carter Moore (two) combined to stop 10 shots for the Mountain Lions.
