YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Brevard College rallied for seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings as the Tornados defeated Young Harris College 11-7 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday (March 24) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Tornados improved to 14-16 while Young Harris fell to 10-18. The Mountain Lions travel to Pembroke, North Carolina, Saturday (March 28) to open a Peach Belt Conference series against the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Young Harris jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Brett Westmoreland drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Troy Kizer followed with a two-run double to left. Brevard got a run back in the second on Brennan Allen's homer to left and two more in the third on RBI singles by John Slade and Ryan Smith to knot the score at 3.
The Mountain Lions retook the lead with two runs in their half of the third and added another in the fifth to open a 6-3 lead. Westmoreland had a run-scoring single through the left side in the third while Logan Bell added a RBI single just inside the left field line. Young Harris took advantage of a dropped fly ball to score its run in the fifth.
The Tornados scored four times in the sixth off YHC reliever Jesse Bates (0-1) to take the lead at 7-6. Brian Durham started the rally with a sacrifice fly before Pat Quinn added a two-run double. Brevard took the lead for good on Joseph Mesi's pinch hit RBI infield single. Brevard tallied three more runs in the seventh to widen its advantage to 10-6. The big hit for the Tornados was a two-run homer by Matthew Proffitt.
YHC added its final run in the ninth on a RBI ground out by Kizer.
Chip Helton (2-0) earned the win for Brevard while James Phillips allowed just one unearned run over the final four innings to earn his first save.
Zach Odom led Young Harris with three hits, while Nick Sexton and Zach Wall had two apiece. Proffitt and Slade led the Tornados with three hits each.
