MARIETTA, Ga. - Anthony Rainone scored three goals and Austin Jerhoff added two more as Lynn University held off Young Harris College 9-7 in a men's lacrosse match Sunday (March 15) afternooon at Raider Valley on the campus of Walton High School.
The Knights improved to 5-2 while the Mountain Lions fell to 3-5. Young Harris returns to action Saturday (March 21) when they travel to Vienna, West Virginia, for a 1 p.m. contest against Ohio Valley University.
Lynn opened up a 4-1 lead on a Jerhoff goal 53 seconds into the second half. Young Harris got back-to-back scores from Billy Magill and Mitch McDole to close to within a goal at 4-3 with 8:09 left before the half.
Rainone added two goals within 68 seconds to give Lynn a 6-3 lead at the half.
Mason McBroom added a man-up goal and Magill found the back of the net which got the Mountain Lions back within a goal at 6-5 with 11:21 remaining in the third quarter. Lynn responded by scoring three of the next four goals to take a 9-6 lead with 7:04 remaining in the game.
Magill led the Mountain Lions with two goals while Jayden Campbell, Zack Hathaway, Chandler Bradley and Mason McBroom accounted for the other YHC scores. Michael Gernatt, who played his high school lacrosse at Walton, led the Mountain Lions with two assists while Kerry Ostrowski and McDole had one apiece.
Ostrowski collected six ground balls for Young Harris, while Zach Hemans and Matty Ledon scooped up three each. Tanner Shepardson, Sean Dever and McDole tallied two apiece.
Dever recorded 11 saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
