Wingate holds off Young Harris 13-11

WINGATE, N.C. - Paulena Dempsey scored two late goals for Wingate University as the Bulldogs defeated Young Harris College 13-11 in a women's lacrosse match Saturday (March 14) afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field.

Wingate improved to 6-3 while the Mountain Lions fell to 6-2. Young Harris will host Point University Wednesday (March 18) with a 7:30 p.m. contest at West Forsyth

Dempsey tied the game 11 on an unassisted goal with 4:03 left in the second half. She scored the game-winner on an assist from Allie Holland at the 2:51 mark. Brittany Andrews added an insurance goal with 13 seconds remaining.

The contest was tied six times (at one, two, three, four, nine and 10). Jaclyn Chiesa broke the tie at 9 on an unassisted goal with 11:45 left in regulation. Alexia Audet answered with an unassisted goal of her own to tie the contest for the final time at 10 with 8:45 to go.

Two minutes later Amanda Kernohan gave the Mountain Lions their first lead since 4-3 (6:51 mark of the first half) when she scored an unassisted goal to make the score 11-10.

Nicole Kernohan had four goals for the Mountain Lions. Audet scored three goals, while Amanda Kernohan had one goal and a team-best two assists. Taylor Lincoln, Jaclyn Kernohan and Kendra Parenteau accounted for the other YHC scores. Jordana Freitas, Lincoln and Meghan Tonnesen each tallied an assist.

Lincoln paced the Mountain Lions with six ground balls while Freitas scooped out four. Parenteau, Tonnesen, and Amanda Kernohan each corralled three apiece.

Sarah Nudelman recorded  nine saves in goal for the Mountain Lions.
