YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Jazmine Kemp scored 18 points to lead the University of North Carolina at Pembroke past Young Harris College 65-60 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday (Feb. 7) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.
The Braves improved to 7-14 overall and to 5-9 in the Peach Belt while the Mountain Lions fell to 9-12 and 6-8. Young Harris travels to Milledgeville, Georgia, Wednesday (Feb. 11) for a 5:30 p.m. conference contest against Georgia College.
Young Harris, which led 34-29 at the half, used an 8-3 start at the beginning of the second half to open its largest lead of the game – 10 points (42-32) – on two Peyton Robertson free throws with 17:51 remaining. UNCP, which shot 65.2 percent (15-of-23) in the second half, put together a 13-2 run to take a 45-44 lead on a steal and layup by Phoenicia Lawson with 14:22 left.
The game see sawed back and forth between the two teams the remainder of the game. Young Harris, which only shot 25 percent (8-of-32) from the field in the second half, took a 53-52 lead on a Briana Bell jumper with 8:54 to play, but UNCP pulled away as they used a 13-2 run to open up a 10-point lead (65-55) on two Kemp free throws with 36 seconds left.
The Mountain Lions got a three-pointer from Rachel Harrell and a put back from Shereese Williams in the final seconds to close within five points (65-60), but couldn't get any closer.
Avae Hardy added 12 points for the Braves while Lawson and Chandrica Fuller scored 11 apiece.
Williams led the Mountain Lions with 16 points and nine rebounds. Robertson and Harrell each finished with nine while Bell had eight.
