YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Rollins College scored eight unanswered goals in the second and third quarters as the Tars spoiled the men's lacrosse home opener for Young Harris College as they recorded a 12-7 victory on a cool Thursday (Feb. 5) afternoon at the YHC Intramural Field.
The Tars improved to 1-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-1. Young Harris returns to action Feb. 14 when they travel to Kennesaw, Georgia, to face Berry College in a 10 a.m. match as part of the Cobb County Classic Series.
Ian Hurley gave Young Harris a 3-2 lead at the 11:43 mark of the second quarter after a nifty assist from Joe Appolonia. That would be the last goal for the Mountain Lions, who went scoreless for the next 30:01.
Carson Buell, who led the Tars with four goals, score back-to-back goals to give the Tars a 4-3 lead with 8:17 remaining in the first half and start an 8-0 run by the Tars that saw Rollins take a 10-3 lead after Morgan Baker scored at the 12:08 mark of the fourth quarter.
Young Harris got back in the game as the scored four unanswered goals in a six-minute stretch to close within 10-7 with 5:42 left in the game as Jayden Campbell and Mitch McDole each found the back of the net twice, but that would be as close as the Mountain Lions would get.
Jack Vonarb scored three goals for the Tars while Baker and Chris Ross added two each and Adam Stefanowicz pushed across one.
Mason McBroom and Michael Gernatt each tallied a goal for the Mountain Lions. Michael Holder, McBroom and McDole each registered an assist.
Zac Barrett won five face-offs for Young Harris. Barrett and Matty Ledon each recorded four ground balls for YHC while Gernatt and McDole each had three. Ryan Pickowitz recorded 13 stops in goal for the Mountain Lions.
