KENNESAW, Ga. – Berry College scored three goals in the final 5:21 to rally for a 10-9 men's lacrosse victory over Young Harris College Saturday (Feb. 14) morning. The match was part of the Cobb County Classic Series being played at the Fifth Third Bank Stadium on the campus of Kennesaw State University.
The Vikings improved to 1-0 while the Mountain Lions fell to 0-2. Young Harris returns to action next Saturday (Feb. 21) when they travel to Brevard, North Carolina, for a 7 p.m. match against Brevard College.
With Young Harris ahead 9-7, Quentin Johnson scored with 5:21 remaining. Maxwell Smerka then recorded his second goal of the day for Berry to knot the game at 9 with 3:43 left. Cory Hall scored with 1:44 to go to give Berry a 10-9 advantage.
Following Hall's goal, Berry won the faceoff and the Vikings held the ball for the remainder of time. Young Harris was felled two penalties in the final 1:14 which hindered its chance at regaining possession.
The seesaw game saw Berry jump to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. However, Young Harris outscored BC 5-1 in the second period. The Mountain Lions got goals from Billy Magill, Chandler Bradley, Jeff Rivait in the second period while Mason McBroom and Jayden Campbell added man-up goals for Young Harris as the Mountain Lions took a 6-4 lead at the half.
The Mountain Lions added another goal from Magill in the third quarter as Young Harris held a 7-6 lead entering the final 15 minutes.
Berry got an early goal in the final quarter to tie the match at 7, before Young Harris opened up a 9-7 lead with 8:22 remaining as Mitch McDole, who also had three assists, and Rivait found the back of the next for the Mountain Lions.
Goalie Ryan Pickowitz had nine saves for Young Harris. Zac Barrett record 14 face-off wins, while Zach Hathaway tallied four ground balls. Stephen Jordan picked up three while Barrett and Zach Hemans had two apiece.
