YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Brea Walker led No. 7 Columbus State University past Young Harris College 48-28 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Sunday (Feb. 15) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.
Columbus State improved to 24-1 overall and to 15-1 in the conference while Young Harris slipped to 9-14 and 6-10. The Mountain Lions travel to Americus, Georgia, Wednesday (Feb. 18) for a 5:30 p.m. PBC contest against Georgia Southwestern State University.
Young Harris, which is ranked No. 10 in the latest NCAA Division II statistics in scoring defense (56.5 ppg), held the Cougars to just 26.6 percent from the field, including 18.8 percent in the opening 20 minutes. However, the Mountain Lions struggled themselves from the floor, hitting 23.9 percent.
Columbus State took a 21-12 lead at the half. Young Harris pulled to within seven points (27-20) after Kaycee Cash hit a jumper with 10:39, but the Cougars scored the next 13 points to open up a 40-20 lead with 5:30 left on a Walker three-pointer.
Walker finished with 14 points while Michelle Mitchell and Eryn Cochran each tossed in 10 apiece. Carrie Washington led the Cougars with 14 rebounds as they held a 53-33 advantage on the glass.
Peyton Robertson led Young Harris with eight points and seven rebounds while Rachel Harrell and Cash contributed six points each. Cash also grabbed six rebounds.
The 28 points is the fewest by a Mountain Lion team in a game in the short history of the program and also set a new Peach Belt record in the process.
