YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. |
Sarah Garner led the Young Harris College women's basketball team to a 53-36 homecoming victory over Lees-McRae College Saturday (Nov. 21) afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

The Mountain Lions improved to 2-1 overall as they won for the third time (four games) in the overall series to the Bobcats, who fell to 0-4. Young Harris returns to action Tuesday (Nov. 24) with a 5:30 p.m. home contest against Reinhardt University.

The Young Harris defense limited Lees-McRae to 32.4 percent (11-of-34) shooting and forcing 32 Bobcat turnovers. Young Harris scored 26 points off those miscues and held an 11-2 advantage on second-chance points.

"That was a great defensive effort," said Young Harris head coach Matt Stearsman. "We played so hard today as a team. I told them after the game that we are establishing an identity. I couldn't tell you who the leading scorer was or who played the most minutes, but I know we had a lot of players diving on the floor and battling out there."

The Mountain Lions broke the game open in the second quarter as they outscored Lees-McRae 20-9 in the period to open up a 30-19 lead at the half. Garner scored eight of her game and career high 12 points. A three-pointer by Keta Robinette at the 6:46 mark gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good at 17-14. That basket ignited a 14-2 run by Young Harris that gave them a 28-16 lead on two Savannah Anderson free throws with 2:04 remaining in the half.

Young Harris extended its lead to as many as 20 points in the second half when Jada Williams hit two free throws with 3:36 remaining to open a 53-33 lead.

Meredith Tarver nearly recorded a double double for the Mountain Lions with eight points and nine rebounds. Markia Stacey led the Bobcats with nine points.
