YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Jordan Chovanec and Benji Sullivan combined to drive in five runs as the sixth-ranked Delta State University baseball team defeated Young Harris College 11-3 in a non-conference contest Tuesday (April 8) evening at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Statesmen improved to 25-7 while the Mountain Lions saw their five-game win streak snapped as they fell to 23-17. The two teams wrap up their two-game set Wednesday (April 9) with a 3 p.m. contest.
Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the first on an unearned run before Delta State scored five runs in the top of the second off YHC starter Cody Beck (2-5). Sullivan had a two-run single in the inning while Chovanec followed with a two-run single of his own.
The Mountain Lions got a run back on Dom Wyshinski's leadoff homer to right-center field in the second. It was Wyshinski's third long ball of 2014. The Statesman broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning to open a 9-2 lead as they took advantage of two Mountain Lions errors to score four unearned runs.
Young Harris scored its other run in the fifth on Tom Valichka's RBI single back up the middle.
Jack Morrow was the lone Mountain Lions to collect more than one hit in the game as he went 3-for-4.
Nick Goza (2-1) earned the win for the Statesmen, while Witt Haggard earned his first saves as he struck out eight in four scoreless innings of relief.
