DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Joey Cecere drove in five runs as the University of North Georgia defeated Young Harris College 10-8 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday (April 13) afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.
The Nighthawks improved to 18-21 overall and to 6-15 in the conference while Young Harris fell to 24-20 and 12-12. The Mountain Lions will return to action Friday (April 18) with a 6 p.m. PBC contest against No. 12 Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga.
Young Harris opened up a 3-0 lead through the top of the fifth. The Mountain Lions scored an unearned run in the third. They added two more runs in the fifth on Adam Moore's RBI single to center and ground out by Tom Valichka.
The Nighthawks tied the game at 3 with three runs in their half of the fifth. Cecere had a two-run single and Tremayne Toorie added a RBI double in the fifth. North Georgia took the lead for good as they took advantage of two Young Harris to score three unearned runs in the sixth to open a 6-3 lead.
Young Harris pulled to within a run at 6-5 in the seventh as Moore, who drove in four runs, connected on a two-run homer. It was his ninth of the season. North Georgia responded with four runs – including a bases-clearing double by Cecere - in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-5 lead.
The Mountain Lions added three runs in the eighth to pull within two runs at 10-8. Zach Wall homered to lead off the inning while Jack Morrow drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Moore added the final run on a sacrifice fly.
Young Harris outhit the Nighthawks 15-9. Trey Rogers led the way with three hits while David Atwood, Morrow, Moore and Wall each collected two.
Travis Donahoo (1-3) took the loss while Christian Turnipseed earned the win.
