TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Tom Valichka's RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the ninth inning capped a late Young Harris College rally as the Mountain Lions defeated North Greenville University 5-4 in a non-conference baseball victory Tuesday (March 4) evening at Ashmore Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 9-10 while the Crusaders fell to 3-11. Young Harris, which is now 1-5 in one-run games this season, steps back into Peach Belt Conference play as they host the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (March 8) at Zell B. Miller Field.
North Greenville had taken a 4-2 lead after the Crusaders scored a run in the fourth inning off a passed ball by Tyler Isbell. It would stay that way until the top of the eighth. Adam Moore led off with a single for the Mountain Lions before Zach Wall tied the game at 4 with a two-run homer. Wall, who also added a solo homer in the fourth inning, went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and now is tied for second on the team with three home runs.
Josh Rudnik, who went 2-for-5, led off the ninth inning off North Greenville reliever Matt Eubanks (0-1) with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trey Rogers. Rudnik then stole third – his 13th of the season – before Jack Morrow and Moore were walked to load the bases. Rudnik scored on a Valichka's grounder to shortstop.
Donald Frew earned his second save as he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for Young Harris. James Mills (2-1) recorded the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
