YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – University of North Carolina at Pembroke used 34 hits as the Braves swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Young Harris College Saturday (March 8) afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
The Braves improved to 16-5 overall and to 6-5 in the league after defeating the Mountain Lions 6-3 in the opener and 14-3 in the second game. Young Harris fell to 9-12 and 1-7. The teams will conclude their weekend series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday (March 9).
Young Harris tied the opening game at 1 in the bottom of the second on Zach Wall's home run – his fourth of 2014 – to left field. Trey Rogers added his third homer of the season an inning later as the Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead. Young Harris added a run in the fifth as Josh Rudnik reached on an error and later scored on a Rogers' sacrifice bunt.
UNC Pembroke got a run back in the seventh on a Brett Huffman single in the seventh and broke the game open with a four-run eighth inning against Young Harris starter Cody Beck (1-3). Daniel Fraga, who went 3-for-3, tied the game at 3 on his single to left. Drew Cole broke the tie with a two-out single to left and Huffman, who went 3-for-5, added a two-run double just inside the left-field line.
Jack Morrow and David Atwood had two hits apiece for the Mountain Lions.
Logan Cook (3-1) earned the win while Zach Andrews added his third save with two scoreless innings.
In the nightcap, seven of the nine UNCP started had at least two hits as the Braves banged out 20 hits, led by Cole and Huffman, who had four hits each. Wall led Young Harris with two hits.
Garrett Hickman (4-1) earned the win for the Braves while Justin Cooper (1-3) took the loss for the Mountain Lions.
